Today, at the UNHQ in New York, the UN Secretary-General asked the international community to PREVENT rather than REACT genocide as the crime does not happen overnight.
Since the end of World War II, the international community has failed to prevent the crime of Genocide (Rwanda, Srebrenica).
The UN Secretary-General underlined that the Genocide Convention has been ratified or acceded to by 149 States; 45 Member States have not become party to it. He closed his speech, remarking that “Preventing and punishing genocide is the duty, the responsibility and the obligation of the entire international community”.
