November 11, 2025The Role of Technology in Protecting Human Rights
Bologna, We Make Future 4-6 June 2025
Technology is rapidly transforming how we protect human rights. It enables us to identify violations as they occur, amplifies the voices of the most vulnerable, and turns ideals like transparency and justice into attainable realities. Today, technology is advancing human rights protection in three main ways. First, AI and big data have radically improved real-time monitoring and reporting, enabling faster detection and documentation of violations.
Second, it expands access and inclusion by giving marginalized communities a direct voice and increasing their access to education, legal help, and economic opportunities. Mobile apps and crowdfunding platforms directly connect those in need with supporters, helping reduce inequalities.
Third, technology strengthens privacy and freedom of expression. Encryption and decentralized systems protect sensitive data, allowing people to communicate and organize without fear of repression. In my presentation, I shared examples from Southeast Asia that demonstrate how technology is improving the lives of women, girls, and LGBT communities.
My talk at We Make Future 2025 has been turned into an episode of the podcast “Voices from the Future.” The podcast features a series of in-depth interviews with leaders in innovation, politics, technology, and society. These conversations are anything but predictable, exploring AI and the major issues of our time from fresh and visionary perspectives.
In this interview, available on YouTube as well, consider how the effective governance of digital platforms is now a critical challenge to protecting children’s rights and democratic freedoms.
I reflect on how technology heightens children’s vulnerability online, creating new forms of abuse, shaping public perception, and fostering risks through social media and digital control. I stress the urgent need for critical digital literacy and emphasize that safeguarding human rights in digital spaces is vital for upholding individual dignity and democracy.
